A Post-Tribulation Rapture

The Bible absolutely teaches that the church will go through the tribulation and then the rapture will occur.

Misconceptions:

1. The Elect – Matthew 24:29-31, “Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. The Elect is the church! – Romans 11:7, “What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded”

2. The Tribulation is not the wrath of God — 1 Thessalonians 5:9, “For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,”
The tribulation period is the wrath of Satan (War in Heaven) — Revelation 12:12, “Therefore rejoice, [ye] heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.” He persecuted Israel for times, times and half a time (3 ½ years)

3. The church is not mentioned after Revelation 4:1… Actually it is!
Revelation 19:7-9, “Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed [are] they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.

As we will see, the events the Bible describes for this seven-year period have never occurred up to this time in all of world history. Thus the Tribulation period, which occupies so much space in Scripture, must be located somewhere in the future. And because of its prominence in the Bible, locating it has generated no small amount of controversy. As a general rule of thumb, the more literally a person takes the prophetic portions of Scripture, the more prone he is to believe that the Tribulation is a literal time of future trauma when the Antichrist (a real person) will rule the world. You will find a study of life on this earth during that period both interesting and traumatic. The main point of controversy about the Tribulation is whether the church will go through the period of distress or will be raptured before it begins.

Based on Daniel’s prophetic vision in chapter 9 and verses 24-27 of the book that bears his name, the Tribulation is generally considered to be seven years in length. In this vision, the prophet was told that “seventy weeks” (or 70 “heptads,” meaning 70 times seven units of years for a total of 490 years) were “determined for your people [the Jews] and for your holy city.” He then listed 3 periods of times, beginning with “seven weeks” (or 49 years) “from the going forth of the command to restore and rebuild Jerusalem” (which is described in the books of Ezra and Nehemiah as the time when the walls and the temple were rebuilt).

The second period was “62 weeks” (or 434 years) until “Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself.” (This is an obvious reference to the period of time between the rededication of the temple and the crucifixion of Jesus the Messiah.) That leaves one “heptad” (or one 7-year period) of tribulation for the Jews that has not yet been fulfilled. This is usually called “the time of Jacob’s trouble,” which is described in Jeremiah 30:3-11. It is also described by our Lord in the Olivet Discourse and in the book of Revelation, where it is called “the tribulation.”
