U.S. troops in Afghanistan "feel abandoned"

120113marinesafghanistan
WASHINGTON – ISIS is beginning to extend its influence into Afghanistan, but the Obama administration no longer is giving the country priority, and the 10,000 American troops that remain are feeling abandoned, a U.S. intelligence officer has told Joseph Farah’s G2 Bulletin

The officer, who is stationed in Afghanistan and has requested anonymity for security reasons, paints a bleak picture in a war zone that is apparently all but forgotten after an investment of more than $ 1 trillion by the U.S.

There simply aren’t enough active-duty U.S. reservists or National Guard personnel in Afghanistan to complete the mission, he contends.

The United States has “zero strategy for the country,” the intelligence officer said.

“We’re essentially waiting for politicians to pull the plug.”

In March, President Obama announced he was freezing U.S. troop levels to 9,800 through the end of this year and would conclude the American war before leaving office.

Yet, defense ministers of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization meeting recently in Brussels reaffirmed their commitment to secure Afghanistan as security deteriorates.

On June 22, the Afghan parliament in Kabul was attacked amid clashes throughout northern Afghanistan.

The Institute for the Study of War recently pointed out that Taliban forces have attacked several strategic bases as their forces have been bolstered by foreign fighters, including Arabs, Uighurs, Chechens, Tajiks and Uzbeks.

“This force composition is somewhat unusual for the Taliban and may reflect a unification of effort between several anti-government militant fronts or a spillover of foreign militants into Afghanistan,” the institute’s report said.

In addition, it said ISIS is establishing judiciary courts and imposing social restrictions in a number of provinces as a sign of “its transition from a fighting force into a governing presence” in Afghanistan.

“The compelling threat posed by a growing ISIS legitimacy, the surge of foreign militants, and the effective military operations of the Taliban will combine to test the limits of the Afghan government and (Afghan security forces) throughout the summer offensive,” the institute said.

Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders, 1898

Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders, 1898

Slavery existed in Cuba longer than anywhere else in the Western Hemisphere, except Brazil. President James Buchanan wrote Dec. 19, 1859: “When a market for African slaves shall no longer be furnished in Cuba … Christianity and civilization may gradually penetrate the existing gloom.”

President Ulysses S. Grant stated, Dec. 2, 1872: “Slavery in Cuba is … a terrible evil. … It is greatly to be hoped that … Spain will voluntarily adopt … emancipation … in sympathy with the other powers of the Christian and civilized world.”

In 1868, a Creole farmer in Cuba began a revolt. Cubans drafted a “10th of October Manifesto,” 1868: “Rebelling against Spanish tyranny, we want to indicate to the world the reasons. … Spain governs us with iron and blood; it imposes … taxes at will; it deprives us of all political, civil and religious freedom; it has put us under military watch in days of peace, arresting exiling and executing without being subject to any proceedings … it prohibits that we freely assemble. …”

Cuba’s “10th of October Manifesto” continued: “Spain loads us with hungry bureaucrats who live from our patrimony and consume the product of our work. … So that we do not know our rights, it maintains us in the ignorance. … It forces us to maintain a expensive army, whose unique use is to repress and to humiliate us. … To the God of our consciousness we appealed, and to the good faith of the civilized nations. …”

The “10th of October Manifesto” ended: “We want to enjoy the freedom for whose use God created man. … We want to abolish slavery. … We want freedom of meeting, freedom of the press and the freedom to brings back consciousness; and we appeal to practice inalienable rights of the man. …”

In 1878, the Spanish government crushed the revolt and ended “The Ten Years War” in which thousands were killed. Under international pressure, Spain ended slavery by royal decree in 1886.

Another “Little War” took place in 1879, and finally, in 1895, open rebellion broke out. Spain sent Governor Valeriano Weyler to Cuba to smash anti-government protestors.

Weyler took the U.S. government’s model of interring Cherokee during the 1830′s Trail of Tears Indian removal and developed it into notorious “concentration camps.” He rounded up hundreds of thousands of Cuban civilians from their rural farms and marched them into crowded camps – an example that Hitler and Stalin followed.

Ultimately, between 1896-1897, over a third of Cuba’s population was in concentration camps. Over 225,000 died from starvation, exposure and yellow fever.

Pleas for help reached the United States. The USS Maine was sent to Havana’s harbor. It blew up under suspicious conditions, Feb. 15, 1898.

Newspaper publishers William Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer stirred public sentiment with “yellow press” journalism into demanding President McKinley intervene militarily. McKinley finally approved a Resolution of Congress, April 20, 1898: “Whereas the abhorrent conditions which have existed for more than three years in the island of Cuba, so near our own borders, have shocked the moral sense of the people of the United States, have been a disgrace to Christian civilization, culminating, as they have, in the destruction of a United States battle ship, with 266 of its officers and crew, while on a friendly visit in the harbor of Havana, and cannot longer be endured. … Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives … that the people of the island of Cuba are and of right ought to be free.”

Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Theodore Roosevelt, resigned and organized the first volunteer cavalry, made up of polo riders, cowboys and even Indians. The U.S. Army used the Gatling gun for the first time in mobile offensive combat.

Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders, along with other regiments that included the Buffalo Soldiers, charged up Cuba’s Kettle Hill, then San Juan Hill, capturing it on July 1, 1898. After eight hours of heavy fighting, there were over 1,500 American casualties.

One of the officers, Lt. John J. “Black Jack” Pershing, later rose to the highest rank ever, “General of the Armies.” Pershing wrote: “The entire command moved forward as coolly as though the buzzing of bullets was the humming of bees. White regiments, black regiments, regulars and Rough Riders, representing the young manhood of the North and the South, fought shoulder to shoulder, unmindful of race or color, unmindful of whether commanded by ex-Confederate or not, and mindful of only their common duty as Americans.”

The wounded were cared for by Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross. When thousand died of yellow fever, Army physician Walter Reed confirmed it was spread by mosquitoes.

Among the thousands of American soldiers who fought in the Spanish American War were 10 regiments of African Americans who were nicknamed “The Immunes” as they were considered more resistant to tropical climate and diseases.

After the war, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines were no longer controlled by Spain.

President McKinley wrote, July 6, 1898: “At a time … of the … glorious achievements of the naval and military arms … at Santiago de Cuba, it is fitting that we should pause and … reverently bow before the throne of divine grace and give devout praise to God, who holdeth the nations in the hollow of His Hands.”

Proof that evolution is hoax

Evolution has been disproved scientifically, not religiously, not with lies and not with deception.
The THEORY of evolution is a hoax and contains lies.

If you believe in the THEORY of evolution, its due to the following…
-You simply have been indoctrinated into it
-Its been repeated to you over and over and over so you believe it,
“Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it”
Jesuit – Adolf Hitler
-You genuinely believe in it, and that’s fine, you can believe in anything, but that’s not science, its RELIGION
-You never studied the lies mixed in with evolution, you think because the majority around you believe it, it must be true
-You think not believing in evolution must mean its unscientific when there is THOUSANDS of examples of where science is used to DESTROY the evolution HOAX.
-You do not know the difference between micro evolution (which has been proven) to macro evolution (not proven) to cosmic evolution (not proven) chemical evolution (not proven) steller and planetary evolution (not proven) organic evolution aka abiogenesis aka origin of life (not proven)
You believe in ALL forms of evolution just because of micro evolution (proven)
just because one finch has different beaks.

This isn’t science, this is a religion.
Entropy is a very predominant factor, it single-handedly rules out any bacteria surviving for millions of years. It would be entropied to death much sooner.

Gaza becoming center for export of ISIS fighters

gaza-isis
TEL AVIV – As Palestinian Salafists allied with ISIS rapidly gain influence in the Gaza Strip, the coastal enclave is becoming an international exporter of jihadists who fight under the ISIS banner in other countries, primarily Syria.

Middle Eastern security officials tell WND of a growing phenomenon of Palestinian militants, some from within Hamas, who are abandoning their posts in Gaza and traveling to Syria to join the Islamic rebels there.

The officials say the Gazans usually travel from Gaza to Egypt to Libya, where they join up with locally based extremists and make their way to Syria.

According to jihadist sources in Gaza, just last week eight members of Hamas’s so-called military wing, the Al Qassam Brigades, left their families in Gaza to fight in Syria under ISIS. The sources said the ex-Brigades forces complained that Hamas is not Islamic enough.

The free WND special report “ISIS Rising,” by Middle East expert and former Department of Defense analyst Michael Maloof, will answer your questions about the jihadist army threatening the West.

Last month, when ISIS militants took over Turkmen villages in Aleppo, the second largest city of Syria, the terrorist group installed a new “governor” there who is a Palestinian from the Gaza Strip.

In recent weeks, Hamas has been facing perhaps the biggest challenge to its rule in the form of rival Salafist groups allied with ISIS. The groups have accused Hamas of “selling out” their Islamic faith and have been openly challenging Hamas, including with firefight clashes and attempted bombings.

Last week, Salafists in Gaza under the banner of the Omar Brigades claimed responsibility for a rocket launched from Gaza toward southern Israel, at least the fifth such rocket fired from Gaza in recent weeks.

The rocket attack violates a truce between Israel and Hamas. The Salafists apparently want to draw Israeli retaliation targeting the Hamas infrastructure. Israel holds Gaza’s Hamas rulers responsible for rockets fired by Gazan groups.

Hamas has arrested dozens of ISIS-allied gunmen and imams, and a Salafist mosque was destroyed.

Earlier this month, a ISIS-tied jihadist, 27-year-old Younis Hunnar, was killed during a raid by Hamas security forces on his Gaza City home.

Things have gotten so bad that Hamas has been using Egypt as a middle man to pass to Israel information on rival Salafist jihadists in the Gaza Strip, hoping the Jewish state will target the militants, an Egyptian security source told WND last week.

The source said the intelligence-sharing development does not mark any change in Hamas’ attitude toward Israel. Nor does the development represent any rapprochement between Israel and Hamas, the source added.

The source further stated the information from Hamas only flows one way and that Israel does not in turn share any intelligence via Egypt with Hamas.

Asked to comment on the Egyptian security source’s claims, Mushir al Masri, a spokesman for Hamas, told WND, “This is a sick joke.

“Israel is our enemy,” al-Masri said. “Our conversations with Egypt has nothing to do with Israel.”

S. Korea Christians Protest Gay Rights Festival

SEOUL – The U.S. Supreme Court decision mandating marriage equality nationwide has energized gay rights supporters around the world. Gay rights remain a highly contentious issue in a key U.S. ally, South Korea, where police did a deft job Sunday of preventing potential clashes between Christian protesters and gay activists.

A massive police presence and physical barriers kept thousands of Christian activists from accessing a gay pride festival Sunday near Seoul City Hall.

But just outside the perimeter, they beat the drums of condemnation. Church groups held signs blaming homosexuality for the spread of AIDS, and saying gay love and gay marriage have no place in Korea.

“When something is wrong you must tell them that it is wrong. You cannot just keep your distance, or try to hide it,” said pastor Joy Kim. You need to tell them with no uncertainty that if they live this way, their small pleasures with cause your family and your nation to suffer.”

But once inside the heavily guarded perimeter, a festive mood prevailed at the pride festival.

Visitors got a chance to snap a photo with likenesses of President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama at an exhibition booth sponsored by the United States Embassy.

“We see this as part of our policy on global human rights. The fact that we are here supporting a Korean festival which has been around for 16 years, with about a dozen other embassies – I think we all really just want to show that we are supportive of LGBT human rights here in Korea,” said U.S. diplomat Anthony Tranchini.

Sunday’s event culminated in a march around the local area by tens of thousands of gay rights supporters.

Despite some occasional taunting across the barricades, the clashes many feared never happened – something many credit to the crowd control proficiency of the South Korean police force.

Meanwhile, gay activists remained dismissive of the Christian groups’ hardline approach to same-sex issues.

“They say that they know the Bible. They say that the Bible teaches that homosexuality is bad, but what they are showing is not love. So this is hypocrisy. This is the epitome of hypocrisy. This is the epitome of hate,” said activist Gabriel.

For now, the mood is upbeat, but South Korean gay activists know they have ahead of them a long uphill struggle to achieve the kind of breakthrough the recent Supreme Court decision gave their counterparts in the United States.

Greek exit from euro appears imminent

Greek citizens rush to banks to try to withdraw cash.

Greek citizens rush to banks trying to withdraw cash.

NEW YORK – Greece is on the verge of default having failed to reach a refinancing agreement with the EU in a series of EuroSummit negotiations last week that broke off Saturday without conclusion.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced banks and the stock exchange in Greece will be closed on Monday in a “bank holiday” that the governing council of ministers has recommended be extended through next week to calm down a panicked run of citizens who withdrew €1.3 billion in cash from ATMs over the weekend.

The European Central Bank decided over the weekend not to increase the €89 billion ($ 100 billion) in Emergency Liquidity Assistance the European Central Bank has reserved to provide Eurozone central banks, including the central bank in Greece, with the liquidity needed to keep ATMs and banks open during a financial crisis like that currently experienced in Greece.

Tsipras is pushing a national referendum on Friday, July 5, calling for a “yes” or “no” vote regarding whether to accept the new austerity measures demanded by the international creditors including the International Monetary Fund, but the vote could turn out to be moot with the European Union threatening to withdraw the current refinancing deal and cut off emergency funds on Tuesday, June 30, if Greece defaults, as appears likely, on a €1.3 billion payment to the IMF scheduled due that day.

“I’m making an appeal for calm,” Tsipras said in an appeal to the nation on Sunday. “Your bank deposits are safe.”

Meanwhile, financial markets around the world are preparing for the likelihood of what in Europe is being called a “Grexit,” the exit of Greece from the euro, given that without a refinancing agreement from the international creditors including the European Union Central Bank and the IMF, Greece has no prospect of meeting the interest and principal payments scheduled on the nation’s huge €300 billion euro debt.

Solutions to Greek debt crisis have stalemated as EU bankers have grown tired of lending Greece the money needed to make scheduled interest payments on the outstanding debt, realizing that promises by Greek politicians to raise additional government funds by raising taxes and cutting pensions are unlikely to work in a nation where additional austerity measures are likely only to depress further an already depressed Greek economy.

The “elephant in the room” turns out to be Deutsche Bank with a $ 75 trillion exposure in derivatives, an amount 20 times the gross domestic product, GDP, of Germany, that could go south should the bank’s complex bets on the Greek debt crisis collapse, causing a failure reminiscent of the derivatives collapse that caused Lehman Brothers to collapse in bankruptcy in 2008, as the bank’s highly leveraged derivative position in the collateralized mortgage market.

On Sunday, Citigroup economist Ebrahim Rahbari, the economist who coined the term “Grexit” in February 2012, advised clients in a research note that he expects the Greek referendum July 5 will result in a comfortable majority for the “yes” camp, eliminating the chance Greece will withdraw from the euro this ear and reducing the likelihood of a Grexit in subsequent years.

Bloomberg reported Sunday that a majority of Greeks support retaining the euro, although in a country with a 25 percent unemployment rate and an economy that has contracted by a quarter since 2010, there is not a majority to support the further tax increases and government spending cuts EU creditors may demand

A decision by Greece to exit the euro would not necessarily mean a decision by Greece to exit the European Union.

Still, the financial disruption a Greek exit from the euro would cause throughout the EU is likely to be sufficient to cause European stock markets to decline precipitously after opening on Monday morning, with the prospect of an EU stock-market collapse causing jitters worldwide.

"I would rather be right than president"

Henry Clay

Henry Clay

“I would rather be right than president,” answered Henry Clay, when told his abolitionist position would cost him the election. Henry Clay was three times a candidate for president, once only 5,000 votes short.

The son of a Baptist minister, Henry Clay studied law under George Wythe, served in Congress over 40 years and was speaker of the house six times. Henry Clay stated in 1841: “Patriotism, which, catching its inspiration from the immortal God … prompts to deeds of self-sacrifice, of valor, of devotion, and of death itself – that is public virtue, that is the noblest, the sublimest of all public virtues.”

Henry Clay was part of the “Great Triumvirate,” with Daniel Webster and John Calhoun, which led Congress during the early 1800s. He helped negotiate the treaty ending the War of 1812 and was key to John Quincy Adams being the sixth president instead of Andrew Jackson.

In 1824, Henry Clay supported Greeks who wanted freedom from the Muslim Ottoman Empire. He supported South Americans wanting freedom from Spain.

Abraham Lincoln described Henry Clay in a eulogy, July 6, 1852: “When Greece rose against the Turks and struck for liberty, his name was mingled with the battle-cry of freedom. When South America threw off the thraldom of Spain, his speeches were read at the head of her armies by Bolivar. His name … will continue to be hallowed in two hemisphere. … Clay was without an equal. … He exorcised the demon which possessed the body politic. … Clay’s efforts in behalf of the South Americans, and … in behalf of the Greeks, in the times of their respective struggles for civil liberty are among the finest on record.”

In 1832, when an Asiatic cholera epidemic ravaged New York, Henry Clay recommended a day of: “Public humiliation, prayer and fasting to be observed by the people of the United States with religious solemnity.”

Henry Clay was second cousin’s of abolitionist Cassius Marcellus Clay. In 1816, Henry Clay helped establish the American Colonization Society to aid free American blacks in founding Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa.

Clay addressed the Kentucky Colonization Society in Frankfort, 1829: “Eighteen hundred years have rolled away since the Son of God, our blessed Redeemer, offered Himself on Mount Calvary for the salvation of our species. … When we shall, as soon we must, be translated from this into another form of existence, is the hope presumptuous that we shall behold the common Father of the whites and blacks, the great Ruler of the Universe, cast his all-seeing eye upon civilized and regenerated Africa, its cultivated fields, its coasts studded with numerous cities, adorned with towering temples dedicated to the pure religion of His Redeeming Son?”

Known as “the Great Compromiser,” Clay opposed the Mexican-American War, and struggled to maintain the Union between the North and the South by proposing “the Compromise of 1850.”

Henry Clay told the Senate, Feb. 5, 1850: “I hope it will not be out of place to do here, what again and again I have done in my private chamber, to implore of Him who holds the destinies of nations and individuals in His hands, to bestow upon our country His blessing, to calm the violence and rage of party, to still passion. … May I not ask of Him too, sir, to bestow on his humble servant … the blessing of his smiles, and of strength and ability to perform the work which now lies before him? … I implore … Heaven … that if … the dissolution of this Union is to happen, I shall not survive to behold the sad and heart-rending spectacle.”

Nine year before the Civil War began, Henry Clay died from tuberculosis, June 29, 1852. The first to lie in state in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, a statue of Henry Clay was placed in the Capitol’s Statuary Hall by the State of Kentucky. Fifteen counties across America were named for him. In 1957, a Senate Committee headed by John F. Kennedy named Clay one of the five best Senators ever.

Rep. John C. Breckinridge recalled Henry Clay as having said: “The vanity of the world, and its insufficiency to satisfy the soul of man, has been long a settled conviction of my mind. Man’s inability to secure by his own merits the approbation of God, I feel to be true. … I trust in the atonement of the Saviour of mercy, as the ground of my acceptance and of my hope of salvation.”

Henry Clay warned the Senate, July 22, 1850: “If there be a war … I will not assert what party would prevail … for you know, sir, what all history teaches … that few wars … have ever terminated in the accomplishment of the objects for which they were commenced. … Think alone of our God, our country, our consciences, and our glorious Union … without which we shall be torn into hostile fragments, and sooner or later become the victims of military despotism, or foreign domination. …”

Clay continued: “What will be the judgment of mankind … who are looking upon the progress of this scheme of self-government as being that which holds out the highest hopes … of ameliorating the condition of mankind. … Will not all the monarchs of the old world pronounce our glorious republic a disgraceful failure? … It is possible that, for the chastisement of our sins and transgressions, the rod of Providence may be still applied to us, may be still suspended over us. … I pray to Almighty God that it may not lead to the most unhappy and disastrous consequences to our beloved country.”

Alzheimers may begin two decades before diagnosis

Even if symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease become apparent in old age, the biological processes that cause the mental decline may begin a couple of decades ago in the ‘middle age’, suggests a new study by an Indian-origin researcher.

Low scores on memory and thinking tests may signal Alzheimer’s up to 18 years before the disease can be diagnosed, the findings showed.

“The changes in thinking and memory that precede obvious symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease begin decades before,” said study author Kumar Bharat Rajan, assistant professor at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.

“While we cannot currently detect such changes in individuals at risk, we were able to observe them among a group of individuals who eventually developed dementia due to Alzheimer’s,” said Rajan, an alumnus of Madras Christian College.

For the study, 2,125 people from Chicago, with an average age of 73, without Alzheimer’s disease were given tests of memory and thinking skills every three years for 18 years.

The researchers found that those who were finally diagnosed with Alzheimer’s scored lower on the scored lower overall on the memory and thinking tests throughout the study.

One unit lower in performance of the standardised cognitive test score was associated with an 85 percent greater risk of future dementia.

“A general current concept is that in development of Alzheimer’s disease, certain physical and biologic changes precede memory and thinking impairment. If this is so then these underlying processes may have a very long duration. Efforts to successfully prevent the disease may well require a better understanding of these processes near middle age,” Rajan said.

The research was published online in the journal Neurology.

Deadly "mistake" found in court"s euthanasia ruling

Vincent_Lambert

An error has been uncovered in an international tribunal’s ruling that would allow officials in France to euthanize a man seriously injured in a 2008 road accident, according to one of the human rights organizations that argued on behalf of the man.

“This is an obvious and appalling error that is hard to explain. How can the highest European Court, in such a sensitive matter, ignore its own case law, while introducing a significant error at the heart of its argument?” questioned a statement from the The European Center for Law and Justice.

WND reported recently on the case, in which the European Court of Human Rights approved a policy of imposing euthanasia on patients who cannot agree.

It came in a ruling in the case of Vincent Lambert of France.

His parents, sister and half-brother petitioned the court to protect him after he “sustained serious head injuries in a road-traffic accident on 29 September 2008, which left him tetraplegic and in a state of complete dependency.”

He’s been treated in several hospitals, but physiotherapy sessions yielded no results, and doctors determined he was in a “chronic vegetative state,” described as “minimally conscious plus.”

The court found that not only can a bureaucracy decide on euthanasia, the victim’s parents lack the right to intervene.

That decision, according to spokesman Gregor Puppinck of the ECLJ, cited a previous case the human rights body had decided, Glass v. the United Kingdom, in asserting the legitimacy of plans to euthanize the accident victim.

In that case, which was similar to the Lambert case, “the mother of a child hospitalized for respiratory disorders complained about the decision of the medical team to administer to her minor son, against her will, a high dose of morphine that may cause his death,” the ECLJ reported.

“The doctors elected to not resuscitate him in the event of a respiratory crisis. Wishing to defend the life of her son against a medical decision, the patient’s mother brought her case to the ECHR, as in the Lambert case.”

In that case, the same ECHR found, “the decision of the authorities to override the second applicant’s objection to the proposed treatment in the absence of authorization by a court resulted in a breach of Article 8 of the Convention.”

The ruling found “that there has been a violation of Article 8 of the Convention.”

So, the ECLJ said, “Doctors should either respect the will of the mother or obtain an injunction against her decision. ”

But the Lambert decision that quoted the earlier precedent said, erroneously, “there had been no violation of Article 8 of the Convention.”

Puppinck noted there is no appeal available from the ECHR’s Grand Chamber. But he said it’s likely there will be some maneuver implemented to get around it.

“One cannot imagine that this error will stay; it shall be removed. Thus, the Lambert case is not closed at the ECHR,” he said.

“To limit the consequences of this error, some will argue that only the final decision of the court matters (i.e. the operative words) and that an error of reasoning does not affect the final decision. The court would have to admit openly – and it is true, that its decision is not strictly deduced from the legal reasoning. Indeed, in fact the court, after having decided on the merits, built its reasoning in order to explain the decision and to develop its doctrinal corpus. This teleological method may have provided the opportunity for error to arise.

“Others will say that to err is human. This is true; but the life of a man is at stake here,” the ECLJ said.

The Lambert case has created a controversy of its own, with judges who dissented in the 12-5 decision writing, “In 2010, to mark its 50th anniversary, the court accepted the title of ‘The Conscience of Europe’ when publishing a book with that very title. Assuming, for the same of argument, that an institution, as opposed to the individuals who make up that institution, can have a conscience, such a conscience must not only be well informed but must also be underpinned by high moral or ethical values. These values should always be the guiding light, irrespective of all of the legal chaff that may be tossed about in the course of analyzing a case.

“It is not sufficient to acknowledge, as is done in paragraph 181 of the judgment, that a case ‘concerns complex medical, legal and ethical matters’; it is of the very essence of a conscience … that ethical matters should be allowed to shape and guide the legal reasoning to its proper final destination. That is what conscience is all about. We regret that the court has, with this judgment, forfeited the above-mentioned title.”

The dissenting judges Lambert is not dead and can breathe on his own and digest food.

“In other words, Vincent Lambert is alive, and being cared for. What, we therefore ask, can justify a state in allowing a doctor … in this not so much to ‘pull the plug’ (Lambert is not on any life-support machine) as to withdraw or discontinue feeding and hydration so as to, in effect, starve Vincent Lambert to death?”

WND reported that the decision recalled the decision a decade ago that ordered doctors to stop providing food and water to Terri Schiavo.

WND reported extensively on the Schiavo case, including on the 10th anniversary of her death.

A care facility stopped giving her food or water in 2005 on court instructions, and less than two weeks later, she was dead.

“If you go back and look at her records, she was starting to form words,” her brother, Bobby Schindler, told WND on that occasion. “It was really encouraging to our family, and to Michael (Terri’s husband) right at first.”

Terri had collapsed in her Florida home for an unknown reason and was taken to a hospital by first responders who feared she was dead. She was comatose for a time, then started responding and was moved to a care center. Her family members say she was getting better.

Then there was a deterioration in Terri’s condition. Bobby Schindler alleges it was after Michael Schiavo, her husband, started dating that he cut off Terri’s therapy and then eventually petitioned the court to withdraw treatment, which included food and water.

“If you look at the timeline, and you see Michael’s actions, you can see that this was all calculated,” Schindler alleged.

The case brought to headlines and kitchen tables across America the plight of those who are seriously brain injured, their rights and whether or not they are cognizant of their surroundings. The case generated four requests to the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene, and all were rejected.

Jeb Bush, a 2016 GOP presidential candidate, was governor of Florida at the time and filed several documents on behalf of Terri. But eventually, according to his press secretary at the time, he concluded the outcome was “in the court’s hands.”

Bush wrote a letter to the probate judge who ordered Terri’s feeding tube be removed and filed a friend-of-the-court brief in an unsuccessful motion to bring the case under federal jurisdiction.

Thailand Halts Briefing on Vietnam Rights Abuses

thailand halts briefing on vietnam rights abuses

BANGKOK – Thailand’s military has broadened its ongoing crackdown of media freedoms, canceling a Bangkok news conference over alleged abuses in Vietnam against ethnic minority Montagnards.

The news conference Friday led by the U.S.-based Human Rights Watch was stopped by local police who presented an official letter from the ruling junta saying the event threatened national security and bilateral relations.

The Human Rights Watch report was to detail abuses against a Christian ethnic minority in Vietnam, the Montagnards. But shortly before the event was to begin uniformed and plain clothes officers arrived at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand and began filming those present.

Journalist Veronica Pedrosa, a club director, said the junta or National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) referenced article Number 44 from the interim constitution granting military leaders wide discretionary powers.

“It was a paid event by Human Rights Watch. The NCPO through the Lumpini Police [station] has communicated to both the FCCT and to Human Rights Watch that they are under Article 44 requiring us to not hold this event because it is sensitive to Thai Vietnamese relations and it might cause instability and insecurity in Thailand,” said Pedrosa.

The report details abuses against the Montagnard Christian community in Vietnam’s central highlands. Human Rights Watch said the report would highlight broader rights violations against religious minorities in the country.

Sunai Pasuk, Thailand researcher for Human Rights Watch, who spoke with the police officers at the journalists’ club, said the military’s steps marked further efforts to halt discussion of human rights in Thailand and the region.

“This is in every way an intervention by the NCPO to silence human rights reports, to silence human rights activists from having a stage to tell the world what is going on in each of the countries that have serious human rights violations. They consider reporting the human rights situation in Vietnam as an act that would undermine friendship and cooperation between Thailand and Vietnam and can jeopardize national security,” Sunai Pasuk stated.

Thai Foreign Ministry officials, according to the rights group, raised concerns the report’s contents may harm bilateral relations with Vietnam ahead of an official visit to Thailand by Vietnam’s prime minister.

In a formal statement, Human Rights Watch expressed disappointment about the cancellation of the press event saying it was a violation of freedom of assembly and “contempt for freedom of the press”

Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director for Human Rights Watch, called the military’s action “surprising” given the report made no links to Thailand, with many references to the Montagnards, based on Vietnamese language media.

“Where we’re talking about another country; we’re talking about Vietnam In the past there have been many reports released in Thailand about other countries and so it’s very surprising that in this case a report about Vietnam that didn’t involve Thailand in any way was not permitted to take place,” he said.

The intervention comes as the U.S. released its latest annual human rights report, which is critical of the junta’s human rights record since it took power in May last year.

The U.S. said the military had sharply curbed freedoms of speech and the press as well as temporarily detaining more than 900 people without charge.

Man saves fiancee – throws self in front of terrorists

(LadBible) A heroic husband and father-of-two used his body to shield his beloved fiancée as gunmen massacred at least 37 tourists during the Tunisia hotel attack earlier today.

Matthew James was shot three times as he put his life on the line to protect his wife-to be Sarah Wilson.

The 30-year-old gas engineer took bullets to his shoulder, chest and hips as the terrorists fired their weapons at the sunbeds at the Sousee Beach resort in Tunisia.

Schlafly: Marriage ruling "not the end, it"s the beginning"

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, one of five lawyers who created same-sex

Justice Ruth Ginsburg, one of five lawyers who created same-sex ‘marriage’ across the United States

Phyllis Schafly, the conservative leader who is credited with defeating the Equal Rights Amendment, is warning anyone who thinks the Supreme Court has settled the issue of “gay marriage” that “it’s not the end, it’s the beginning.”

The author of “Who Killed the American Family” told WND the decision Friday is “a shocking attempt by the Supreme Court to establish judicial supremacy in violation of everything the American Constitution has stood for.”

“We have a government of three separate powers and they have their duties, rights and obligations, but nobody assigned to the judicial branch in the Constitution has the right to overturn the law that we’ve had for millennia,” she said. “It’s just not the kind of country that we live in.”

Her comments came Friday after the Supreme Court, 5-4, ordered the creation of same-sex marriage across the nation. Justice Anthony Kennedy’s reasoning included citations to Confucius and Cicero, and his opinion was blasted by four separate dissents that found the Constitution has no reference to marriage and doesn’t support the majority opinion.

The majority included two justices, Ruth Ginsburg and Elena Kagan, who publicly had advocated for same-sex marriage even while the case was under consideration but refused to recuse themselves.

Schlafly believes the decision will create a new political movement and more legal challenges. She drew a comparison to the issue of abortion, which is “settled law” but remains a hot political issue generating opposition from millions of Americans.

“A lot of people thought when the Supreme Court handed down its bad decision in Roe v Wade, well the Supreme Court has spoken and that’s it. That settles it. Well, it didn’t settle it. It was just the beginning of a big fight. And eventually that decision’s going to be overturned. But, meanwhile, we’ve cut big holes in it because the American people did not accept the ‘rule of law’ that one human being could belong to another human being.

“The same thing will happen here. I don’t agree that Americans should submit to unilateral rule by what Lincoln called ‘that imperial tribunal.’ That’s not the kind of government we have. If we’re going to change any laws they should go through the legislative process. The idea that basically one judge should basically remake the law, a law that has been law since long before our Constitution was adopted, is just not acceptable.”

She said the idea that “one judge on the Supreme Court can just undo the whole marriage law is just not the American way.”

Paul Kengor, a historian, professor and author of “Takedown: From Communists to Progressives, How the Left Has Sabotaged Family and Marriage,” also believes there will be future legal battles.

However, Kengor warns some of those battles will have the church, or other Christian institutions, on the defensive, because there will be more attacks by the state on the religious freedom of Christians.

“With this decision, the religious persecution will now begin full throttle. These five justices have arrogated and rendered unto themselves what heretofore was the province of the laws of nature and nature’s God – the right to define what is marriage. They have made it no less than a constitutional right. Amazingly, they’ve done so even after several years of watching what leftists – in the name of ‘tolerance’ – will do to those who dare to disagree with them on redefining marriage.”

Kengor believes the marriage decision simply expands the battlefield by providing new ways for social conservatives and Christian institutions to be targeted.

“This stunning new constitutional invention of ‘gay marriage’ will be an extraordinary and extremely damaging wrecking ball for the secular left to attack religious people who disagree with them. A long period of official persecution against religious people has just been launched,” he said.

“I warned people: Do not trust the left with ‘gay marriage.’ Don’t do it. Such warnings have been ignored, including by a Supreme Court majority. This is going to get really ugly. Really, really ugly. Mark the date June 26, 2015, on your calendar.’”

Kengor says modern America has now been firmly uprooted from its religious and cultural foundations.

“This single act, or ‘thunderbolt’ as our ‘gay-marriage’ president gleefully called it, constitutes a firm separation from our nation’s Judeo-Christian underpinnings and understanding of marriage and family. This, ladies and gentlemen, is a fundamental transformation. A genuine revolution and true fundamental transformation began on this day.”

Michael Brown, an expert who holds a Ph.D. from New York University and has researched and written a number of books on homosexuality, including “A Queer Thing Happened to America,” called Friday’s decision “the worst case scenario playing out.”

Brown blasted the legal rationale behind the court’s ruling.

“As for the ruling itself, it is absolutely ridiculous, both from a legal and moral point of view, as the dissenting justices pointed out so well,” he said.

Brown also agreed with Kengor about the long-term effects of the decision.

“People now understand why we have been shouting from the rooftops for years that gay activism was the principle threat to our freedoms of religion, speech and conscience,” he said.

However, Brown also offered hope to social conservatives.

“Because it is so extreme, the ruling will only help to galvanize the pro-marriage side, just as Roe v. Wade, as tragic a ruling as it was, helped galvanize the pro-life movement, which is stronger today than it was 45 years ago. In writing my upcoming book ‘Outlasting the Gay Revolution,’ I presupposed that the court would rule in this way, already laying the groundwork of how we must respond: We refuse to compromise our convictions, and we refuse to redefine marriage.”

Brown urged Christians to remain optimistic.

“Unless the Lord comes first, today’s social madness will also pass.”

Kengor says the roots of the decision can be found in something far deeper than simply legal innovations.

“Gay marriage is a completely new move, but, in a sense, it’s also a very old one that harkens back to humanity’s oldest roots: Ye shall be as gods. Americans are now their own determinants of truth, of right and wrong, of moral absolutes and even of what things mean.

“On January 22, 1973, the court allowed Americans to determine what they consider a human life. Now, on June 26, 2015, the court allowed Americans to determine what they consider marriage and family. This truly is a new day for America, no question.”

Fearing for Their Lives Emergency Medics Hesitate to Respond to Buenos Aires Slums

fearing for their lives, emergency medics hesitate to respond to buenos aires slums

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA – While responding to an emergency medical call in a Buenos Aires slum one night last summer, Dr. Paula Fernndez capitulated to the demands of street thugs in order to save her life.

The ambulance she was riding could not reach two people with gunshot wounds because the streets of Villa Zavaleta, a slum on the city’s south side, are narrow.

“We got off the ambulance with the driver and walked two blocks down a corridor,” Fernndez recalls. “It rained and rained. The place was crowded with people and police. At the end of the corridor, there was a dying patient, with a gunshot wound to his face, and next to him, another one, with a firearm wound to the abdomen.”

Gazing as if watching that moment in July 2014 unfold anew, Fernndez says she immediately tended to the person with the abdomen wound, but allies of the person with the face wound ordered her to stop.

“No, not that one!” she recalls people yelling. “You bitch, help this one!”

Before she could even react to their demands, they carried the person with the face wound to the ambulance.

“I saw they were coming to look for me,” she says. “They wanted to carry me too. So I went fast to the ambulance and we took the victim with us. I thought, lsquo;I do what they say, because if not, they will kill me.’ I felt scared! Very scared!”

Straightening her white coat, Fernndez says she never understood why she had to tend to one victim over the other.

The drug trade has so sharply increased violence in the slums of Buenos Aires that doctors and ambulance personnel refuse to enter some areas without police backup. As a result, tens of thousands of people are not guaranteed access to emergency health services. Doctors and ambulance personnel train to de-escalate tense situations and manage their risks, but they add that there’s no substitute for public respect.

The Emergency Medical Care System of Buenos Aires, known by its Spanish acronym, SAME, is run by the city government’s Ministry of Health. It aims to cover the population’s emergency medical needs.

SAME stations its 130 emergency vehicles at 34 public hospitals and other strategic locations. An emergency communications center dispatches the nearest ambulance to each of the roughly 2,400 medical emergencies called in each day.

Buenos Aires, a city of 200 square kilometers (124 square miles), is home to 2.9 million inhabitants. The city is surrounded by a metropolitan area known as Greater Buenos Aires, home to more than 15 million people, according to the 2010 National Census.

More than 5 percent of the population – about 163,000 people – lives in slums, according to the census.

Argentines apply the term slum (villa miseria in Spanish) to neighborhoods with dirt roads and precarious housing on publicly owned land.

Almost 20 percent of the city’s population, lacking any form of medical insurance, depends solely on public health care, according to the census.

So far, no doctor or paramedic personnel has been killed servicing the city’s slums, says Dr. Jorge Gilardi, president of the Municipal Doctors Association, the trade union that represents public hospital doctors in the capital.

Still, his colleagues fear for their safety, he says.

“There is fear! There is fear!” he says. “We will keep going, but we won’t commit suicide.”

The increase in violence became noticeable about five years ago, Gilardi says, but it is constantly increasing despite the presence of the police, the Naval Prefecture and the National Gendarmerie, which provides border security, in the slums.

“The assaults were growing in quantity and intensity,” he says. “They became more serious, going from a push, to a blow, to a threat with a firearm.”

At some hospitals, a police unit accompanies each ambulance dispatched to a slum. In other cases, police guards are assigned at the request of ambulance crews.

The situation has been getting worse, says Dr. Alberto Crescenti, general director of SAME. These days, ambulance teams do not know what they will find when they respond to an emergency call.

“This is a profession of risk,” he says. “We know when we are going, but we don’t know if we will return.”

Ambulance drivers also voice fear.

In the year he has driven for SAME, Juan Carlos Murillo has been insulted several times, and his ambulance has been stoned.

“Sometimes we cannot even enter, because even police tell you, lsquo; We cannot give you a guarantee,"” he says. “The police themselves tell you the thing is intense, and we cannot go in.”

Juan Godoy, 32, a resident of slum 21-24, also on the city’s south side, says he throws stones at ambulances whenever he sees them in his neighborhood because he believes emergency crews discriminate against people of the slums.

“They’re a bunch of cats,” he says, using a local term for people who consider themselves superior. “You call them and they don’t come. They leave you for last.”

Gilardi denies that health care staff discriminates against slum inhabitants.

“We never discriminate,” he says.

Out of institutional principle, SAME responds to every emergency call, Crescenti says. But ambulance personnel are expected to take all necessary precautions, including not entering a situation they deem dangerous, to protect themselves.

“No one is a superhero,” he says. “We are all human, and we must recognize that sometimes we feel afraid. One feels afraid of losing their life, and it is not a minor thing.”

Murillo says he disregards about 20 percent of emergency calls out of fear for his safety.

While letting ambulance teams decide whether to enter a slum may protect them from harm, the practice deprives slum dwellers of a full right to health care, says Maximiliano Marn, a sociologist who specializes in homeless populations.

Sonia Lpez, 37, a resident of slum 21-24, says she has twice been denied emergency care for her children.

In April 2014, her 5-year-old son ran a high fever and had seizures.

“The ambulance never arrived, and my son was about to die, because his face was getting all black,” she says. “I took a taxi right from there and we went to the hospital.”

And in February 2015, her 9-year-old daughter suffered a shock when she touched a bare power cable. Again, she says, no ambulance came, and she took her daughter to a hospital via taxi. Her daughter needed five days in intensive care.

Lpez says her neighbors assume no ambulance will come, so they try to get to the hospital by other means.

Slum violence is worst in areas controlled by drug traffickers, Marn says.

Drug traffickers take over the territory in which they operate, he says. Their control of their area makes it difficult for social workers, doctors and government organizations to carry out their missions.

In high-crime slums, Marn says, doctors no longer expect to be treated with respect for their intentions and wellbeing.

“This has to do with who runs the slum and how he or she does it,” he says. “The state has no control there.”

Organized, large-scale drug trafficking has risen over the past five years, Marn says.

GPJ contacted the Ministry of Security on four occasions to confirm this information and ask about the law enforcement strategies implemented in slums. Elizabeth Bak of the agency’s Communication Department says she is “not authorized” to disclose that information.

The Metropolitan Police force has been carrying out operations aimed at eradicating drug trafficking in the south of the city for more than nine months, according to the agency’s website.

The inhabitants of slums and precarious settlements confirm the rise in drug trafficking in their neighborhoods. They perceived it as rising 50 to 60 percent from 2010 to 2014, according to “Increased Drug-trafficking in Slums, Severe Addiction Problems in Families and Populations at Risk,” a report published by the Argentine Pontifical Catholic University in May 2015.

Leoncia Laino, who has lived in the Villa Zavaleta slum for 42 years, says she has witnessed drug dealers growing in number and gaining more power in the neighborhood over the past year – despite the presence of law enforcement agencies.

“There are the gendarmes, and it’s as if there was nobody,” says Laino, 46.

Marcelo Munilla Lacasa, the prosecutor for the district that includes the Villa Zavaleta and 21-24 slums, also says drug trafficking has grown stronger and more violent.

The drug trade causes collateral damage, putting emergency personnel at risk and keeping innocent slum residents from getting the emergency care they need, he says.

The ideal solution would be to eradicate slums and drug trafficking, Marn says.

“But they are things that are too ambitious,” he says.

To empower its employees, SAME two years ago began requiring training inresponding to high-risk situations.

Instructors, including a psychologist specializing in violence, train emergency responders to de-escalate violent situations, Murillo says.

Gilardi urges slum inhabitants to respect and protect the medical personnel who strive to serve them.

“If we as a society take care of the health team, the health team will take care of us,” he says. “We want to use a white coat and not a bulletproof vest.”

Dr. John Coleman: The Club of Rome, Chatham House And The Committee of 300

U.S. general: Obama making Americans ripe for kidnap

kidnap

The Obama administration is changing federal policy to allow the families of American hostages to negotiate ransom payments with the abductors, but a former high-ranking Air Force officer says that’s a recipe for many more Americans to get kidnapped.

On Wednesday, President Obama announced the anticipated policy change. The change comes after the families of several Americans murdered by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, lashed out at the administration for refusing to let them negotiate and even allegedly threatening some with prosecution if they tried to pay a ransom.

Officials say U.S. government policy will remain unchanged in not paying ransom for American hostages, because they believe it will only encourage U.S. enemies to take more citizens into custody.

Retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Tom McInerney fears the very same thing will happen by letting families negotiate price of their loved one’s release.

“This is a very difficult one because there’s a great deal of emotion. But the fact is, I think we’re going to see more cases of kidnapping by radical Islam and trying to use those Americans that are over there helping in the Arab countries as treasury bait,” said McInerney, who is also a military analyst for the Fox News Channel.

McInerney concedes that reasonable people can disagree about whether to give families the option of negotiating a ransom, but he said it’s the wrong choice, and the administration is making a mistake by talking about it.

“I would much rather have not announced it because I think it will increase the number of kidnappings. I think if we had a covert program that could have been done, that would have been better,” said McInerney, who calls the policy change “a political decision.”

Listen to the WND/Radio America interview with retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Tom McInerney:

In addition to the protests of hostages’ families, McInerney believes the administration also changed course and adopted the policies of some European nations that allow families to negotiate with hostage takers.

The Obama administration is also promising to do a better job of communicating with the families of future hostages. Several families publicly scolded the government for infrequent updates and being treated as a nuisance when they asked federal officials for more information.

McInerney said that’s the least any government should be able to do.

“There is nothing that encourages the radical Islamists to kidnap people if we keep our people informed,” he said. “So there’s absolutely no reason that the administration is not giving them up-to-date briefings, at least on a weekly or a bi-weekly basis.”

In the big picture, McInerney said the best way to discourage more ISIS kidnappings is to wipe the radicals off the face of the earth. He is deeply frustrated by the administration’s refusal to use its air-power dominance.

“We’ve got to take the handcuffs off our air power,” he said. “Seventy-five percent of the missions that come back are not dropping bombs. I know the air commander over there says, ‘Well, the generals that are complaining have never fought this kind of war.’ He’s correct. We’ve never fought a war where we lost cities like this and air power has been so ineffective.”

McInerney said the Obama team is paralyzed by fears of killing innocents in the air campaign. He said that mindset cannot lead to success.

“We know where they are,” he said. “We’re worried about the collateral damage. I think we have to accept it is war, accept that collateral damage and have it over quickly.”

South Africa Reconsiders Participation in ICC

South Africa said it may withdraw from the International Criminal Court after controversy rose last week over its refusal to arrest Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on genocide charges.

Government spokesman Jeff Radebe made the announcement Thursday after a Cabinet meeting, saying a withdrawal would be a “last resort” after a review is made of the Rome Statute that sets out the guidelines for the ICC.

Bashir was in South Africa last week for a two-day meeting of African Union heads of state.

Under the Rome Statute, South Africa could have arrested him, as he is wanted by the ICC on genocide charges. But while a South African court considered the matter, Bashir defied an order to remain in South Africa and instead returned home to Khartoum, putting him out of reach of South African authorities.

The South African court handed down the order for Bashir’s arrest just hours after he left the country.

Bashir is wanted on charges of war crimes and genocide related to the ongoing conflict in Sudan’s Darfur region.

The United Nations estimates some 300,000 people have been killed and more than 2 million displaced by the violence.
